Reading the Bible for all its worth 11.0 MB
Pastor Matt Hickman Sunday, January 29, 2012. The texts are Genesis 17:1-14 and Acts 10:45-11:23. Growing up, Pastor Matt was urged by his church to take the Bible literally, and he took this seriously. As absurd as it sounds, he spent sleepless nights wondering if he could wear poly-cotton shirts (Leviticus 19:19), or whether he should gouge out his eyes after watching late-night cable programming (Matthew 5:28-29). His crisis of literalism came after calling out his pastor for supporting the Gulf War, only to be told the Sermon on the Mount was not intended to be taken literally. Pastor Matt helpfully and with integrity outlines how to take the Bible seriously, even when it seems to disagree with itself or to contradict science, or pushes us out of our comfort zones. The Bible is indeed "the fully reliable and trustworthy standard for Christian faith and life" (from the Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective). Reading the Bible for all its worth Praise God from whom all blessings flow 14.4 MB

Pastor Tim Schrag Sunday, June 20, 2010. The text is Luke 8:26-39. The topic is "anxiety binders" of our time, and really of all times. In the biblical text, the people were afraid of Jesus because he had made the demoniac whole and normal. They evidently preferred a possessed man in their midst, rather than needing to deal with the possibilities of Jesus' power to heal [them?]. Our Fear of Wholeness Jubilee: An Old Answer to a Current Question 9.6 MB
Pastor Tim Schrag Sunday, June 13, 2010. The texts are Luke 4:14-21, 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 and Isaiah 5:7-8. Economic justice is a topic both relevant, and elusive, for Christians. Because it is a large topic and not given to easy answers does not mean Christians should shy away from looking at ancient Scriptures as holding answers for modern problems.
